Hello! I’m Laura Knowles, an award-winning children’s author whose illustrated non-fiction has been published by DK, Templar, Lonely Planet Kids, Welbeck and Quarto. To date, my titles have been translated into 14 languages, finding their way to every corner of the globe.
After years working on the editorial side of children’s publishing, I made my first foray into writing with several lyrical picture books about the natural world, a topic that remains close to my heart. I’ve since branched out to write for older children on topics ranging from flags to Bigfoot, and constellations to dung beetles. I’m finding that a well-honed ability to explain the world around us is coming in very useful now my son has reached his peak ‘why?’ phase.
My books include Mysterious World (Lonely Planet Kids), The Sky We Share (Templar), A Friend to Nature (Welbeck), which was longlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2023, and It Starts with a Seed (Words & Pictures), which was awarded the 2017 Margaret Mallett Award for Children’s Non-fiction.
I live in Surrey, UK with my partner, our young son and daughter, an elderly goldfish and one very chatty cat.
If you’d like to work with me on a new project, a school visit or anything else book-related, please do get in touch!
